5 Long-term benefits of surfing and why it is never too late to start

It is very likely that you are just sitting on your desk at home or in the office, your mind has just wondered off, without thinking too hard you have typed in the words “sun”, “waves” and “surf” or best all of them together. With just a few clicks you have magically landed on our Sunwave Surfcamp Fuerteventura blog.

No matter how you got here, there are these moments in life when an escape is inevitable and surf breaks with blue skies, all day sun, crystal clear turquoise water and epic waves - best to find here on the Canary Islands - are usually the best to forget all about offices, desks and indoors - you name it!

But have you considered the longterm benefits yet?Surfing and the process of learning how to surf, can be healing beyond all measures and open up a whole new perspective on life.

Here are our 5 long-term benefits of surfing:

1) Fitness & Personal Achievements

Surfing is simply a great way to stay in shape. From paddling, popping up on the board, to advanced manoeuvres - this sport will tone muscles that you thought you never had. But beyond the fitness aspect, surfing give you the benefit of a great sense of personal achievement. You will celebrate your first steps on your board like your parents celebrated your first birthday. Even as an advanced surfer, you are never stop learning, progressing but also falling and trying again.

2) Nature

Nothing is more rewarding than living with the rhythm of the moon, sun and ocean. As an ultra frothing surfer, you will get yourself to become a morning person even though you love a good sleep in, should the tide be right and the swell be there. You will know, which sets of clouds mean what kind of changes in weather and wind direction and read forecasts like the daily newspaper. You will simply start living and breathing with the nature as many times as it is possible for you to head out for a surf trip. Surfing inevitably transforms people to true nature lovers.

3) Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a form of meditation, some people do to put all of the buzz of everyday life into place. The real reason why so many people love to surf regularly is because getting active in the ocean is considered the best practice of stopping your mind to wander off and to dive into the now. Had a stressful day? Surf it off and you will forget the meaning of the word “stress”! What better long-term benefit could I list here?!

4) Connect with people

When passionate about surfing you will find yourself to be a magnet for like-minded surf enthusiasts from all over the globe. We are a big and diverse family of ocean lovers!

5) Perspectives

You can do it until you are - yes!- until you are 70+ !

The best thing about surfing is - once you are hooked- you will and can never ever stop doing it because surfing is a sport of all genders, ages and body types, which makes it a passion with a true long-term perspective!

That said, it is simply never too late to start learning how to surf!

Personally, I update my life goal of becoming a cat lady: Become a silver surfer!
